Exploring Feelings – Anxiety

AUTHOR: Attwood Tony
DESCRIPTION: This is a cognitive behaviour therapy program that aims to explore and manage anxiety problems in children with Asperger’s syndrome, High functioning autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. The ‘Exploring Feelings program’ is designed to explore the mental world from a scientific perspective and to encourage the cognitive control of emotions. This is a highly structured program, made up of six, 2 hour sessions. Each session includes activities and information to explore specific feelings of being happy, relaxed, anxious or angry. At the end of each session is a project to be completed by the child before starting the next session. Each participant has a workbook with a section to record individual comments and responses to questions. The program was originally designed for small groups of two to five children between the ages of 9 and 12 with two adults coordinating the program. However ‘Exploring Feelings’ can be modified to work with one child, or adolescents or adults. Any parent, therapist, teacher or other adult without cognitive therapy behaviour training could implement this program.
